What is phase balancing or ACE?

Answer:

Phase balancing, also known as ACE (Adaptive Current Equalization), means that the EnergyHub redistributes power between the three incoming phases in the property so that the consumed power in the property is evenly distributed between the phases. It counteracts phase imbalances that occur when one of the phases is heavily loaded due to many electrical components being installed on the same phase.

What the EnergyHub does when phase balancing:

  • Drawing power from phases with lower loads
  • Converting the alternating current to direct current to facilitate movement
  • Converting the direct current back to alternating current
  • Distributing alternating current to the phase with the high load

The benefits of this include:

  • Preventing the main fuse from tripping if consumption on one of the phases becomes too high.
  • Enabling operation of a single-phase load that draws more current on one phase than the main fuse is rated for, e.g., single-phase charging of an electric vehicle.
  • Maximizing space for three-phase charging of an electric vehicle by evenly distributing all other consumption between the phases.

Example:

In the image on the left, we see how consumption looks on the three phases entering the property.

  • Consumption on phase 1 is 15 A
  • Consumption on phase 2 is 29 A
  • Consumption on phase 3 is 13 A

In this case, the EnergyHub draws in 4 A from phase 1 and 6 A from phase 3 and distributes 10 A to phase 2. This means that despite consumption remaining the same in the house, the current passing through the main fuse is 19 A per phase, as seen in the image on the right.
