How does automated balancing of the battery and battery maintenance work?

Answer:

Most batteries on the market need to activate certain functions occasionally to ensure proper operation and longevity. To maintain proper operation and longevity over time, batteries need to be balanced periodically.

Ferroamp now fully automates this process to ensure the performance of our customers. LFP batteries need to balance so that the battery cells in the system are as equal as possible to achieve optimal performance over time. EnergyHub performs this by responding to commands from the battery's BMS, which indicates when balancing needs to be done.

Balancing occurs during the night between 23:00 and 04:00 to minimize disruption, It usually finishes within one or two hours, but in exceptional cases can take up to 30 hours. Our ambition is to eventually offer users the ability to determine when balancing occurs. Note that this is for software version 5.9.0.

This is what applies to our different types of batteries:

  • Batteries from Pylontech
    • Balancing occurs when needed but with maximum 3 months interval. It involves charging up the battery. Even if you have set charging restrictions, the battery will charge. When the balancing is completed, it will return to previous settings.

  • Batteries from PSM
    • Cycling occurs about once a month by performing a full charging cycle, which means the battery cycles from 100 to 0% and 0 to 100%. Even if you have set charging restrictions, the battery will charge fully. When the balancing is completed, it will return to previous settings.

If for any reason the balancing is interrupted or not completed in time, it will repeat the procedure the next night.
