What does Peak Shaving mean and what should I think about when setting the different parameters?

Peak Shaving is used when the idea is to even out the consumption of power from the grid by letting the battery "cut" power peaks in your own consumption. In this operational mode, the system allows the battery to be charged with power from the system's SSO:s (Solar String Optimizers) as well as power from the power grid. We set the thesholds which decide from what amount of consumed power from the power grid that the battery is allowed to be discharged, and up to what amount of consumed power from the power grid the battery is allowed to be charged. 


By cutting power peaks, it is possible to reduce or avoid raising the size of the main fuse. For customers with power subscription this reduction also enables reduction of the power tariff which is based on the highest consumed power each month.

Example:

  1. Choose Peak Shaving in the menue in the left window.
  2. Choose the battery settings which are recommended for your battery in Battery Wizzard
  3. Set the Discharge Threshold and Charge Threshold. 
    - Discharge Threshold determines from what amount of power consumed from the power grid that the battery will start to discharge.
    - Charge Threshold determines under what amount of power consumed from the power grid that the battery will start to charge.

  4. With the settings above the battery will discharge when the power consumed from the power grid exceeds 8 kW and charge when the power consumed from the power grid is less than 4 kW.

This means that if the consumed power is 10 kW, the battery will be discharged with 2 kW (10kW - 8kW = 2kW). 

This also means that if the power consumed is 1 kW the battery will be charged with 3kW (4kW - 1kW = 3kW).


NOTE! Make sure the battery is chosen correctly in the Battery Wizard. The battery will never be able to charge or discharge with a higher power than it is designed for but if the Discharge Threshold and Charge Threshold are set lower than they shouldm this will limit the battery..

 

RECOMMENDATION: Look at the historic power data in the Power View when setting the threshold values in order to optimize the battery usage.  

Charge Threshold should be set so that the battery is allowed to charge regularly, which means that there are a number of hours during the space of 24 hours when the power consumption is lower. 

Discharge Threshold should be set so that the battery's maximum power (kW) can handle cutting the peaks as well as having enough energy (kWh) available in the battery to cu the whole peak. 


EXAMPLE:

  • We have a battery with a storage capacity of 10 kWh and a maximum power of 4kW  
  • We have a base load of 6 kW but during 3 hours every day the consumption rises to 13 kW. This makes about 19 A per phase and results in having a fuse size of 20A
  • In order to make sure that the battery is allowed to charge, we set the Charge Threshold to 8 kW
  • In order to stay on a 16 A fuse we set the Discharge Threshold to 10 kW. We will be able to cut 3 kW (3kW<4kW) during 3 hours which corresponds to an energy amount of 9 kWh (9kWh<10 kWh). 
  • Our peak is now 10 kW which corresponds to about 15 A per phase.
