Why does Ferroamp use DC-grids?

Answer:

The reason Ferroamp has chosen to work with direct current (DC) is because:

  • By using a DC-grid between the EnergyHub and the DC components like solapanels and batteries the system becomes scalable and it´s very easy to add more components in the system later on.
  • Most of the electronics in our homes are powered by DC. LED lighting, fans, refrigerators, etc., all use DC power. Today, these devices have small rectifiers that convert the alternating current (AC) from our wall outlets into the DC needed to operate the components. Solar panels produce DC power, and even electricity generated by small wind turbines must be rectified before it can be fed into the grid. Additionally, batteries in our homes and vehicles also operate on DC. By building an infrastructure around DC, we enable future systems where more and more DC components can be directly connected to a DC grid. This allows for significantly reduced energy losses and more efficient and smarter energy use.

  • Moreover, because DC flows in one direction, it is much easier to control where and how the electricity is distributed. We leverage this, for example, when sharing energy between properties, where we have the ability to distribute energy based on measured consumption.
